Lastgoogle is. A couple weeks ago, Blogger deleted the Lastgoogle blog. (Not this one, the other one that had been going for 2 or 3 years.)

Then I rolled out Lastgoogle RC2 tonight, and promptly hosed my server. Currently returning a 500 page.

Hope to be up and running on a new server by next week. In the meantime, you'll just have to be satisfied with the first Google results.

Parser Fixed

The parser has been fixed, but Lastgoogle remains broken. It looks like Google is indeed blocking requests from Lastgoogle's ip address. I guess I'll have to figure out a way to change the ip address or use a proxy.

It looks like Google changed their search results page formatting around Jan 6. I'm in the process of trying to adjust the Lastgoogle parser. A better parser would probably traverse the DOM-tree, but that's more work than I care to do. So let's see if I have enough duct tape and gum to get this thing running again.

Recently set up an AdWords starter account. (No, not for lastgoogle.) In any case, I notice one of my first click-throughs came from the site http://icanhascheezburer.com/, which is a parked domain site (i.e. a link farm).

Now, I thought parked domain sites were against Google AdWords/AdSense terms of service. But apparently, I was wrong: Answer #50002. More information on the topic can be found here: apogee-web-consulting.com

Anyway, I think it's pretty crappy that Google promotes these worthless blights on the face of the internet. Now, I know some will ask, how is lastgoogle, or the lastgoogle blog, any better?

Well, I can think of 2 or 3 -- ok, exactly 2 -- reasons. But, that's the thing. Google long ago cancelled my AdSense account for these sites because they have the word Google in them! Daddy always told me I should have been a link farmer.

New Spam Filtering Technique

In wake of yesterday's notice about the new lastgoogle spam filter, I came across this suggestion on slashdot today. I've added it as my first spam-tagging rule.

Even without it, the improvement with the new filter is apparent on the lastgoogle blog.

Well, the spambots finally pushed me too far. Rewrote the spam filter on the lastgoogle site to more aggressively purge spammy queries. Not the most sophisticated algorithm in the world and there may be a few false positives. But the success (or failure) of the script should be readily apparent on the lastgoogle blog.

Finally got sick of all the phentermine posts and created a blacklist. Phentermine, you're on the list. Viagra, you're on thin ice. Suck it, bots.

I'm letting the lo#### stuff slide for now because, well, mostly because I'm too lazy to write the regex to catch it. But it also functions as a pretty effective random polling agent in determining the top last domains and doesn't seem to be doing any harm.

By the way, if you'd like to learn more about phentermine, I highly recommend the wikipedia article. It's much more insightful than that crap you read in your email.

Decided to finally sit down and makeover lastgoogle from top to bottom. What I thought would be a fun little exercise for Saturday morning turned out to be a weekend-long epic. But in the end, I seriously cleaned up the code, styling, and database. And, most importantly, it once again actually finds the last result for you.

Next on the lastgoogle to do list: get the lastgoogle blogger feed going again. And then automate some reports for this site.

Last Google Parser Out of Order

The Last Google Parser, which seeing as how it didn't use regex was always a bit of hack put together with duct tape and chewing gum, appears to no longer be able to identify the last known Google result. See for yourself:

It will still give you a link to the Google page containing the last result. But starting around October 5th, it stop delivering the actual page, indicating that Google either (A) changed the way it formats its results pages, or (B) started blocking queries by the parsing script.

I'll try to fix this -- along with the Last Google Blog feeder -- as soon as I have a chance. Which will probably be just in time for the next format update that breaks things.

For all the amateur Google anthropologists and archaeologists out there, I've uploaded the lastgoogle query data for May (899 total queries) to the lastgoogle wiki:

It's a gzipped mysql file generated in phpmyadmin.

It offers some insight into the type of basic data Google probably collects when you use their search engine. I'd guess Google probably collects a lot of other data, too, like your ip address and browser info and who knows what else.

1. What does the "Last Known Google Result" mean exactly? Is it the last Google search someone did?

No, that would be the Last Google Search Executed (LGSE). The Last Known Google Result (LKGR) is the lowest ranking Google result that Google will display for a particular query. (Google, as far as I can discern, only publishes the first 1000 indexed results.)

2. Why isn't the LKGR (Last Known Google Result) I get the same as the one you got?

This is perhaps best answered with a haiku:
